George Payne Butchers sizzles at regional BBQ contest
North-east members of the Butchers Q Guild served up some sizzling successes, as they did battle in the regional finals of a national barbecue competition.
Butchers from Northumberland to West Yorkshire fired up their barbecues at Blacker Hall Farm Shop in Wakefield in a bid to become kings of the char-grill and win through to the Q Guild national BBQ finals next month.
All three competition categories for sausages, burgers and steaks were hotly-contested, notably the barbecued steak section, with judges awarding three runner-up prizes,
among them George Payne Butchers in Brunton Park, Gosforth, for its Highland rib eye steak.
Paynes also bagged four gold awards for its Lamb & Mint with Redcurrant Jelly & Pork Sausage, Chilli & Red Pepper Sausage, Lamb & Mint with Redcurrant Jelly Burger, and Beef Steak Burger.
R Turnbull & Sons Butchers in Alnwick bagged a brace of overall class victories with its traditional pork sausage and beef and caramelised onion burger, while J Brindon Addy Butchers in Hade Edge, Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, fired up the best steak.
Both Turnbulls and Addys will now pit their champion products against other regional butcher winners in the Q Guild national BBQ finals to be staged at The Weber Grill Academy in Oxford, on Wednesday, June 19. ENDS
