George Payne Butchers set to fire in national BBQ contest finale
George Payne Butchers has won through to the national final of the 2015 Butchers Q Guild national BBQ competition.
The shop emerged victorious in the north-east regional heat’s speciality BBQ product category with its Beef short rib, a cut of brisket on the bone with the shop’s own beef rub mix of sea salt and spices, which is then marinaded for two weeks and available either unsmoked or smoked.
The best in class entry came from a prime Hereford heifer reared locally in County Durham – George Payne Butchers continues to champion both traditional and rare breeds British meat, the vast majority sourced on the doorstep.
The shop, run by Q Guild founder member George Payne, picked up four further gold awards with its 21-day aged rump steak, from the same Hereford heifer, traditional pork sausage, beef burger, and Burgueze speciality burger.
George Payne Butchers will now be hoping for further sizzling success at the finale, which takes place at The Windmill Village Hotel, Coventry, on Sunday, May 31, when national winners in each of six BBQ product categories will emerge.
In addition, one of them will have the ultimate honour of being crowned overall supreme champion by the Q Guild, which represents 110 award-winning butchers from the Scottish Highlands down to the south coast.
