George Payne Butchers brings home the bacon awards
George Payne is pictured left at the Q Guild Smithfield Awards with Ainsley Harriott.George Payne Butchers in Brunton Park, Gosforth, has won a gold award for its streaky bacon in a national product evaluation event for the second year running.

What’s more, the home-cured bacon was awarded maximum marks by judges at the annual Smithfield Awards, organised by the Butchers Q Guild, the UK’s top independent butchers’ organisation, and held at The Butchers Hall in London. (Tues, Nov 8)

For good measure, the Princes Road shop also won silver awards for its back bacon and smoked back bacon.

More than 400 products from Q Guild members across the UK were assessed by an independent panel of judges, made up of both industry experts and lay judges. Awards were presented by the celebrity chef and tv presenter Ainsley Harriott.

George, a founder-member of the Q Guild, said: “The judges praised our gold award-winning bacon for its wonderful flavour. As a member of the guild, we regard ourselves as among Britain’s best butchers and these awards prove that we have the products to match. Winning a Smithfield Award definitely adds value and prestige to our business as a whole.”
